Jamiroquai, es quiza, una de las bandas más queridas dentro del circuito musical desde sus inicios a principios de los noventas hasta hoy. A pesar de que inicialmente se albergó dentro de la corriente del acid jazz con otros exponentes tan importantes como Brand New Heavies, Galliano o Corduroy, esta agrupación ha sabido combinar influencias q van desde el acid jazz, el disco y el pop hasta ciertos ritmos electrónicos. Llegando a crear canciones tan pegajosas como bailables.

Jamiroquai (cuyo nombre deriva del término “Jam” = improvisación musical y el nombre de la tribu americana “Iroquai”) se formó poco después de que Jason Kay (Stretford-Lancashire, 30-12-1969) fuera rechazado en una audición para ser cantante de la Brand New Heavies. Jason forma su propia banda con Toby Smith (teclados), Stuart Zender (bajo), Nick Van Gelder (batería) y Wallis Buchanan (didjeridoo, un instrumento de viento que usan los nativos australianos). Esta vendría a ser la formación original la cual graba el primer sencillo “When You Gonna Learn” (octubre 1992, #52) en el naciente sello Acid Jazz del DJ Gilles Peterson y Eddie Piller (donde militaban tambien Galliano, Mother Earth, BNH y Corduroy). Se dice que mucho antes Jason y compañía ya habían grabado un acetato con el tema “Natural Energy” del cual sólo existen 3 copias. Sin embargo no podría negar ni confirmar este hecho. La falta de promoción del sencillo hace que Jamiroquai termine firmando contrato con Sony que edita el siguiente sencillo “Too Young to Die” (marzo 1993, # 10), un mes antes, “When you Gonna” habia sido re-editado por Sony aparentemente sin consentimiento de la anterior editora llegando al puesto 69. Dos sencillos se editaron poco después “Blow Your Mind” (mayo 1993, # 12) y el sencillo que da nombre al primer álbum “Emergency on Planet Earth” (agosto 1993, # 32). El álbum (#1), se edita en versión LP como disco doble, CD y como MC con el arte gráfico de James Marsh (conocido por su colaboración con Talk Talk) y el infaltable “Buffalo Man”, el icono q acompañaría cada nueva entrega del grupo. Finalmente se editan como promocionales “If I LIke it I Do it” y “Revolution 1993”. En este album colaboran entre otros John Thirkell y Gary Barnacle (Hen Pecked Horns), Simon Bartholomew (BNH), Kofi Kari Kari, The Reggae Philarmonic Strings, entre otros.

Poco después de la edición del disco, Van Gelder se retira de la banda para formar el proyecto Akimbo con Simon Bartholomew y miembros de Soul II Soul. Sin embargo solo se llega editar un álbum “On Top” que contiene muy buenos temas y no debe dejarse de lado.

Para marzo de 1994, la banda ya había sacado un nuevo sencillo promocional para Japón, “The Kids”, sin embargo, el siguiente sencillo “Space Cowboy” llegaría en setiembre de ese año alcanzando el puesto 17. Cuando llegó a América generó cierta controversia (en la tapa del sencillo se ve al “buffalo man” de papel listo para ser enrollado como “porro” , incluso se omite la palabra “Cheeba” en la versión americana). Zender se retira momentáneamente después de grabar su parte del bajo para el sencillo, pidiéndole tiempo a Jason para arreglar su relación con la modelo Mila Jovovich. Sin embargo al regresar, Jason había contratado a otro bajista (acreditado como “Mr. X”) para grabar la versión del álbum (me imagino que a Stuart no le habría caido en gracia). Los siguientes sencillos “ Half the Man”, “Stillness in Time” y “Light Years” no hacen más que confirmar la calidad de la música de la banda que ya incorporá a Derrick Mackenzie como nuevo batería (y al igual que Jason el único miembro original que ha permanecido hasta hoy). “The Return of the Space Cowboy” (octubre 1994; #2) recibe buenas críticas de revistas como “Rolling Stone” o “Entertainment Weekly”, editándose como vinilo doble y con la versión no editada de “Stillness in Time” además de estar prensado a 45 rpm! .

Faltaba poco para la consagración de la banda en América.

Ha pasado bastante tiempo desde que empecé con este modesto blog…y la verdad no me puedo quejar, han habido personas muy agradecidas con todo el trabajo que me he dado (subir un album toma entre 1 a 2 horas además de poner super lenta mi pobre PC). Debo reconocer que desde principios de este año no he vuelto a subir cosas por distintos factores (mis problemas de salud…algunas crisis en el plano sentimental…el inicio de mis estudios en diseño web…y otros trabajos extras) los cuales me han impedido que retome lo que comenze en algún momento como un hobby.
Leyendo los comentarios que se quedaron en mi inbox, he decidido retomar las actividades para alegria de algunos ( y desgracia de otros..que no deben ser muchos jejeje) Lo único que puedo pedirles es un poco de paciencia porque aún no he terminado con algunas cosas pendientes; pero trataré de darme un tiempo para conseguir y subir las cosas que ustedes me solicitan.

Muchas gracias a todos aquellos que me han seguido de tiempo y me han animado a continuar…y a las personas que entran por primera vez..que ojala disfruten su visita!.

BLUE RONDO À LA TURK/BLUE RONDO (I)

Cuando empecé este blog comence con una entrada dedicada a Modern Romance. En esta oportunidad les dejo alguito de otra banda inglesa que incursionó a principios de 1981 y que fusionaba ritmos latinos al igual que MR, y que se le asoció al movimiento New Romantic (que de por si era más un movimiento mas estilístico que musical): Blue Rondo à la Turk.

Con un nombre tomado de una composición del músico de jazz Dave Brubeck, los Blue Rondo à La Turk aparecen con otros artistas del movimiento New Romantic como Classix Nouveaux, Duran Duran y Spandau Ballet. A diferencia de los anteriormente mencionados, los Blue Rondo à La Turk hacian una música más retro donde imperaban los vientos y las percusiones, fusionando algo de jazz de los 50′s con latin.
Se formó en torno al diseñador de ropa Chris Sullivan (vocalista) completando la formación, el griego Christos Tolero (vocalista y bailarin), Mick “Lloyd” Bynoe (batería), Art Collins y Moses Mount Bassie (saxofones),Tholo Peter Tsegona (trompeta), Mark Reilly (guitarra), Daniel White (teclados) y los brasileños Kito Poncioni (bajo) y Gerardo D’Arbilly (percusión).

Debutaron con el sencillo “Me and Mr. Sanchez” (#40) en noviembre de 1981 editado en el sello Diable Noir y distribuido por Virgin, seguido de “Klactoveesedstein” (#50) en marzo de 1982. “Carioca” y “Heavens are Crying” fueron los últimos sencillos editados del Lp debut “Chewing the Fat” (#80) el cual entró en los charts el 6 de noviembre de 1982 permaneciendo ahí por 2 semanas.

Aparentemente como toda corriente musical, los new romantics no durán mucho y varias bandas amparadas en ese estilo comienzan a variar de orientación, la música se vuelve más pop e incluso acortan el nombre a “Blue Rondo”; pero esto no fue suficiente y después de la edición del Lp “Bee Knees and Chicken Elbows” en 1984 y los sencillos “Slipping into Daylight” y “Masked Moods”, la banda se desintegra. Un año mas tarde Reilly, White y Poncioni formarían otra banda más exitosa en terminos comerciales: “Matt Bianco”. Finalmente con la consagración de esta nueva agrupación a mediados de los 80′s , Virgin edita el LP compilatorio “Too Soon to Come” en 1986, que contenia temas del “Chewing the Fat” y del “Bee Knees”.

La banda Fiat Lux (que significa en latin “Que haya más luz” ) fue formada por Sebastian Barbaro (A.K.A. Steve Wright – vocalista) y David P. Crickmore (guitarra, bajo, teclados) en Wakefield, Inglaterra alla por 1982, cuando ambos asistian al Bretton Hall College. Wright y Crickmore habian formado parte de la banda Juveniles; y después de graduarse Wright integro una compañia de teatro (Yorkshire Actors) donde conoció a Bill Nelson (guitarra y vocalista de Bebop De Luxe). Asi mismo Wright le entrega a Nelson una cinta con unos demos, este oye la música e invita al duo a grabar su primer sencillo en el sello Cocteau (propiedad del guitarrista). “Feels Like Winter Again” es el nombre del mismo, y poco después, Ian Nelson (saxos, percusión y teclados) hermano menor de Bill, formaría parte de la banda.
Durante los tres años de vida de la agrupación se editaron 6 sencillos, 5 de los cuales en Polydor además de un mini LP y un video en concierto; después de grabar material para un álbum que nunca se materializo, la banda se separó.

Para 1996, la salud de Dave se deterioraba cada vez más; un año atrás ya habia intentado suicidarse; esto hacía que Martin considerará deshacer definitivamente la banda ya que durante repetidas veces, Dave practicamente grababa mal o no grababa sus partes; Martin, que ya tenía un número de canciones escritas consideró incluirlas como material solista; sin embargo Dave ingresa a un programa de rehabilitación para combatir su adicción a la heroina.

Poco después con un Gahan rehabilitado, y con las sesiones hechas con el productor Tim Simenon; “Ultra” (#1) es editado en 1997 y llega al puesto 5 en el chart americano; previamente los sencillos “Barrel of a Gun” (#4) e “Is No Good” (#5) hacen sus apariciones en los charts. En America, “Home” (#23) y “Useless” (#28) aparecen como un sencillo doble.

Al año siguiente Mute decide editar un nuevo compilatorio; “Singles 86<98″ (#5) que continua la línea del original “81-85″, pero esta vez estaba editado en formato doble e incluía un tema grabado durante las sesiones de “Ultra”; “Only When I Lose Myself” llegaría al puesto #17. No pasaria mucho y se decide re-editar el “Singles 81>85″ con nueva prsentación, remasterizado y dos bonus tracks: “Photographic” (la versión del LP “Some Bizzare” ) y “Just Can’t Get Enough” [Schizo Mix].

Entrado el nuevo milenio, la banda, con la ayuda de Tim Bell como productor, consigue editar en mayo del 2001 “Exciter” (#9) que en sólo una semana vendió 115,000 copias. Durante este año se extraerían 3 sencillos del nuevo álbum: “Dream On” (#6), “I Feel Loved” (#12), “Freelove” (#19) y al año siguiente ” Goodnight Lovers” (#7 en Dinamarca) .

El 17 de octubre del 2005 sale a la venta el álbum “Playing the Angel” (#4) que tiene como novedad temas escritos por Dave y no sólo por Martin, de este álbum se desprenden los temas “Precious” (#4), “A Pain that I’m Used to” (N/A) , “Suffer Well” (N/A) (escrita por Gahan y con música de Philpott/Eigner) y finalmente ” John the Revelator” (N/A). Para promocionar el álbum, la banda emprende su correspondiente gira mundial conocida como “Touring the Angel” en noviembre de ese año. Los 43 conciertos fueron grabados bajo el nombre de “Recording the Angel” y distribuidos en edición limitada.

En abril del 2006 aparecen versiones remasterizadas de “Speak and Spell”, “Music for the Masses” y “Violator” en Super Audio CD, DVD, con bonus tracks y videos; en octubre de ese año le tocó a “A Broken Frame”, “Some Great Reward” y “Songs of Faith and Devotion” . Un año después sería el turno de “Construction” , “Black Celebration” , “Ultra” y “Exciter”.

Durante el 2006 además de editarse el DVD/CD en vivo “Touring the Angel: Live in Milan” , se edita el recopilatorio “Best of Depeche Mode vol.1″ (N/A) presentando un nuevo tema: “Martyr” (#13) (un outtake de “Playing the Angel”) . Curiosamente este recopilatorio incluye una canción de cada álbum menos del “Black Celebration” . Después de finalizada la gira del “Touring the Angel”, Depeche Mode tomaría un largo receso.

Después de 3 años, Depeche Mode con ayuda de Ben Hiller, sacaría a la luz su última producción “Sounds of the Universe” (#2) el primer álbum editado en EMI a nivel mundial y donde nuevamente hay algunos temas compuestos por Dave Gahan. La gira correspondiente llamada “Tour of the Universe” no se hizo esperar, comenzando oficialmente el 10 de mayo de este año en el Ramat Gan Stadium de Israel y que concluirá el 10 de febrero del 2010 en Alemania. El 13 de octubre de este año tuvimos la oportunidad de disfrutarlos en la explanada del Estadio Monumental a pesar de unos aburridísimos Feedbackers como teloneros. Pero esa es sólo mi opinión.

DEPECHE MODE (II)

En 1986 y después de la edición del compilatorio “The Singles 81-85″, Depeche vuelve a la carga entregando nuevo material, producido por Miller y Jones, “Black Celebration” (#4) engendró 3 sencillos los cuales no fueron tan populares como los anteriores; esto se debe quiza al cambio musical que estaban experimentado, ya que tanto las letras como la música se había vuelto más oscuras.
Otro cambio radical fue la imagen del grupo. Es a partir de este LP, que DM empieza a trabajar con el fotografo Anton Corbijn; atrás quedaron las ropas de cuero y la imagen sadomasoquista que solían usar, todo comenzo a tomar matices oscuros tanto en la fotografia como en los videos (filmados principalmente en blanco y negro). Con esto Dave Gahan se consolida como la imagen principal del grupo .

Para el año siguiente Depeche alista su nuevo LP, pero cambiando esta vez la producción, “Music for the Masses” (#10) contaría con Dave Bascombe, como productor del disco, pero según Alan Wilder, Bascombe terminó simplemente como un ingeniero de sonido. Con la edición de los sencillos “Strangelove” (#16), “Behind the Wheels” (#21) y “Never Let Me Down Again” (#22), además del sencillo “Little 15″ (#18) editado en Europa, Depeche entra con fuerza al mercado americano.

Se inicia entonces el Tour for the Masses” (que se iniciaba en España y concluía en E.E.U.U.) y que constaba de 101 presentaciones, de las cuales la última sería registrada como el siguiente LP del grupo y su primer álbum en vivo titulado “101″ . De este LP se editaría como sencillo la versión en vivo de “Everything Counts” (#22).

Para 1989, Martin editaría el “Counterfeit” EP como solista, además de iniciar la promoción del siguente álbum del grupo. “Personal Jesus” (#13) se convertiría en el primer sencillo de nuevo disco. “Violator” (#2) que no sería editado hasta el año siguiente. Esta vez la producción correría a cargo de Mark Ellis (a.k.a. Flood) quien le dió un nuevo sonido a Depeche Mode, haciéndolo más accesible y a la ves más sofisticado. “Enjoy the Silence” (#6) , sería uno de los temas más populares de la banda, asi como los dos últimos sencillos editados del álbum, Policy of Truth” (#16) y “World in my Eyes” (#17) . “Violator” destaca, por ser el primer álbum de DM, donde la guitarra toma un papel más importante con respecto a los discos anteriores. El álbum demostró ser uno de los más vendidos además de ser bastante influyente para las nuevas generaciones de músicos de electrónica.

Después del “World Violation Tour”, Depeche debía a comproner y arreglar los temas de su siguiente álbum; sin embargo, El grupo paso casi 2 años separado; Dave quién se había divorciado se fue a vivir a California, seducido por el estilo de vida americano, se había convertido en un adicto a las drogas y apenas mantenía contacto con los demás miembros. Las sesiones de grabación de “Songs of Faith and Devotion” (#1) estuvieron cargadas de mucha tensión, ya que Gahan no se presentaba o simplemente se iba de las grabaciones sin decir nada, Flood practicamante estaba harto de todo y sólo la constancia y dedicación de Wilder ayudo a sacar el álbum después de muchos retrasos.

De este álbum se editarían los siguientes sencillos: “I Feel You” (#8), “Walking in my Shoes” (#14), “Condemnation” (#9), y finalmente “In Your Room” (#8). Estos sencillos y el álbum hicieron que Depeche Mode se quitaría la etiqueta de música eletrónica y entraría ya como una banda de música alternativa (de hecho, el cambio musical fue un poco chocante para algunos).

El 19 de mayo de 1993 comenzaría la más larga y extenuante gira para Depeche; “El Devotional Tour” que comprendia 99 shows incluida una segunda gira llamada “The Exotic Marathon”; para entonces el exceso de trabajo y las malas relaciones con Wilder hacen que Andy Fletcher sufra una crisis nerviosa siendo sustituido por Daryl Bamonte para la continuación de la gira.

Después de terminada la Gira “Exotic”, Alan Wilder hace publica su separación de la banda; estaba cansado del comportamiento errático de Dave y Martin y de su pésima relación con Andy; era Junio de 1995. Alan Wilder aparecería después con su propio proyecto “Recoil” .

Para ese entonces, muchoes pensaban que sería el final de Depeche Mode.

Como para recordar aquella memorable presentación en la explanada del Monumental, les estoy dejando la discografia de una de las bandas más emblemáticas de los 0chentas, vendedora de millones discos a nivel mundial y cuyo estilo inicialmente synthpop, derivo hacia un industrial revestido de cierta comercialidad, hasta llegar a la música electrónica actual fusionada con guitarras y baterias reales. Los inicios de Depeche Mode se remontan a 1977 en Basildon – Essex, cuando 2 jovenes estudiantes Vince Clarke (Vincent John Martin 03-07-1960, en voz y guitarras) y Andrew John Fletcher (08-07-1961 en bajo) forman la banda “No Romance in China”, dos años después Clarke formaría otra banda “The Plan” con 2 amigos; Robert Marlow y Paul Langwith; paralelamente Martin Lee Gore (23-07-1961 en guitarra) formaba un duo acústico con un amigo, Philip Burdett “Norman and the Worms”, pero no hubo continuidad.

Para 1979 Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, Robert Marlow y el recién llegado Paul Redmond formarian otra banda “The French Look”; pero no sería hasta el año siguiente que el embrión de Depeche Mode se formaría con Clarke (voz y guitarra), Gore (teclados) y Flechter (bajo) con el nombre de “Composition of Sound” . Esto sucedía en Marzo de 1980; en mayo de ese año, “Compostion of Sound” y “The French Look” tocarían juntos en el St. Nicholas School Youth Club en Basildon.

Poco después el sonido del trio cambiaria al usar sólo sintetizadores, y es en ese momento que entraría otro nombre clave a la banda; Dave Gahan (09-05-1962) entra poco después de que Clarke lo escuchara cantando el cover de de David Bowie “Heroes”; Depehce Mode había nacido.

El nombre de la banda viene del título de una revista de moda francesa “Dépêche mode”; fue precisamente Gahan quién sugirió ese nombre (erroneamente se le traduce como “moda rápida” o “moda apresurada” , pero el término apropiado es “noticias acerca de moda”).

El debut de Depeche aparece bajo la forma de un tema “Photographic”, grabado para el naciente sello independiente “Some Bizzarre” propiedad del DJ Stephen John Pearce conocido como “Stevo” y que se incluiria dentro del sampler “Some Bizzarre Album” que presentaba además a otros pioneros de la new wave como “Soft Cell”, “The The” y “B-Movie” entre otros. Poco después es el músico y director de Mute Records, Daniel Miller quien pone los ojos en ellos ofreciéndoles la oportunidad de grabar su primer sencillo propiamente dicho en Diciembre de 1980. “Dreaming of Me” aparecido en Febrero de 1981 llega sólo al puesto 51 pero anima a la banda a sacar un segundo sencillo; “New Life” (Junio 1981) consigue un alentador puesto #11 en los charts; pero es con “Just Can’t Get Enough” (#8) que la banda se hace conocida a un nivel más amplio. El album debut tambien es editado, “Speak and Spell” llega al puesto 10, la banda comienza a presentarse en Top of the Pops y otros programas de TV, hasta se graba el video promocional del tema (dirigido por Clive Richardson), pero la primera separación de la banda empieza. Vince Clarke decide ponerse a un lado en Noviembre de 1981, citando diferencias musicales y como se estaba llevando la música dentro la banda. Poco después Clarke aparecería con la cantante Alison Moyet formando el duo “Yazoo” (o Yaz en América) y 3 años después el duo “Erasure” con Andy Bell.

Después de la separación de Clarke, Gore es forzado a tomar la composición de temas (previamente había compuesto dos temas para el álbum debut). A su vez, la banda pone un aviso anónimo en Melody Maker solicitando un tecladista; Alan Charles Wilder (1-06-1959) un joven músico contestó el aviso mintiendo sobre su edad para poder obtener el empleo. Wilder integra Depeche a partir de 1982 inicialmente como tecladista de apoyo y luego como miembro oficial de la banda. Wilder (el único músico con formación dentro del grupo) sería quién definiria el sónido de Depeche Mode poco a poco.

En Enero de 1982 se edita el primer sencillo de Depeche sin Clarke; “See You” (#6) aunque este y los dos siguientes sencillos “The Meaning of Love” (#12) y “Leave in Silence” (#18) así como el álbum “A Broken Frame” (#8) serían el material de menos agrado para Martin, ya que para él, “Aún no tenian una dirección definida y arrastraban aún el estilo pop de Clarke”. Cabe agregar que se graban los videos correspondientes a estos sencillos, pero la banda al final mostró su disconformidad con el nuevo director (Julian Temple) por lo que estos videos no se encontraban disponibles comercialmente (incluso se omiten del video compilatorio “Some Great Videos”).

Un año después (Enero de 1983) se edita el séptimo sencillo de la banda, que no estaría incluido en el siguiente álbum. “Get the Balance Right!” (# 13) presenta ya a Alan Wilder como miembro oficial y co-escritor con Gore del tema “The Great Outdoor”. Poco después aparece el LP “Construction Time Again” (Agosto de 1983) en el cual Wilder se encarga con Daniel Miller y el ingeniero Garreth Jones de la parte de producción; el álbum vendría a ser considerado el primer álbum de sónido mas elaborado, gracias a los arreglos de Wilder y en parte al trabajo de Jones. De este LP se extrajeron 2 sencillos: “Everything Counts” (uno de los primeros temas en incluir samplings)(#6) y “Love in Itself” (#21). Poco después en setiembre se inicia el “Construction Tour” que empieza en Irlanda y concluye al año siguiente en Alemania.

Finaliza la gira promocional, y como un adelanto del nuevo álbum se edita el sencillo “People are people” (#6) que llegó al puesto 13 en Estados Unidos, siendo el tema más pinchado en las estaciones alternativas. Sire, la compañia encargada de distribuir los albunes de DM en América decide editar el EP compilatorio (#74) que lleva el mismo nombre del sencillo, y que incluye temas de los dos albunes anteriores además de ser el primer LP de la banda editado ahi.

“Some Great Reward” (#5) editado en Julio de 1984 aparece nuevamente grabado con colaboración de Jones y fue realizado en los estudios Hansa en Alemania donde David Bowie y Eno grabaron sus discos conocidos como la “Trilogia de Berlin”. De este disco se desprenden ademas de “People are People”, los sencillos “Master and Servant” (# 9) y “Blasphemous Rumours/Somebody” (#16). Después de la correspondiente gira, los miembros de la banda deciden tomarse un tiempo sabático después de haber trabajado 4 años seguidos, y en Octubre de 1985 se edita el primer LP recopilatorio conteniendo los trece sencillos de la banda (además de dos temas nuevos) “The Singles 81-85″ (#6) ; paralelamente se edita un mes después en Canadá y América el LP “Catching Up with Depeche Mode” (#113) que no es sino la contraparte del “The Singles” pero omitiendo los temas ya aparecidos en el EP “People are People” además de incluir 2 lados b (“Flexible” y “Fly on the Windscreen”).

El sónido de Depeche Mode que ahora era influenciado por el industrial, se volveria más oscuro tanto a nivel musical como lírico en los álbunes posteriores.

THE BUGGLES

Una de las primeras muestras de synthpop de principios de los ochentas vendrían de la mano de dos músicos de sesión que coincidieron en una audición como apoyo para la cantante Tina Charles a mediados de los setentas; Trevor Horn (bajo, vocales y percusión) y Geoff Downes (teclados), si bien es cierto no permanecieron mucho tiempo con Charles comenzaron a trabajar juntos en 1976.
Horn, quien había tocado en una orquesta de Jazz y Downes que trabajaba grabando jingles, forman con Bruce Wooley (guitarra, vocales y theremin) la agrupación “The Buggles” (creo que la traducción vendría a ser algo asi como “Las Cornetas”), el cual, según Horn declaró, fue “el nombre más asqueroso que se le ocurrió en ese momento”, aunque se dice también que es sólo un juego de palabras entre Horn y Downes, una broma hacía los “Beatles” .

Se comienzan a componer los primeros temas, pero antes del lanzamiento del material, Wooley decide partir dejando a Horn y Downes como duo. A Wooley (quién nunca se consideró como un miembro fijo) se le atribuye 2 temas como co-autor: “Video killed the Radio Star” y “Clean Clean”, ambas aparecerían en el álbum de Bruce, “English Garden” al lado de su banda “The Camera Club” que incluía a un joven Thomas Dolby y aún futuro Thompson Twin (Mathew Selligman).
Esta demás decir que la versión de Buggles de “Video Killed the Radio Star” (#1) fue más conocida que la de Camera Club; de hecho, fue su video clip realizado por Russel Mulcalhy, el que inició el ascenso de MTV como cadena de música por televisión, si bien es cierto que no es el primer video clip de la historia, se le considera como uno de los padres de este género. El disco de Buggles editado a principos de 1980 llevaria el título de “The Age of Plastic ” (#27) del cual se editarían “The Plastic Age” (#16), y con menos fortuna “Clean Clean” (#38) y “Elstree” (#55) , pero sería suficiente para poner en ascenso las carreras de ambos.

La música de la banda se caracterizó por ser bastante sintética y resaltando el tema de la tecnología. Parecia por ese entonces que todo iba muy bien con el duo, sin embargo, por esas cosas del destino, Horn y Downes grababan algunos temas en el mismo estudio, donde también estaban los miembros de Yes (a excepción de Jon Anderson y Rick Wakeman). La idea inicial era de que Buggles les vendería 1 tema compuesto por ellos a Chris Squire, Alan White y Steve Howe; sin embargo por sugerencia de Brian Lane, manager de ambas bandas, Squire y compañia animan al duo a acompañarlos en los ensayos; ambos siempre habian sido fans de Yes y de aquellas colaboraciones aparecería el único álbum de Yes donde Jon Anderson no canta, sería Horn el que pondría las voces y colaboraria en el bajo ocasionalmente.

“Drama” es editado el 22 de Agosto de 1980 llegando al # 2 en los charts británicos, el nuevo Yes parece estar listo para iniciar gira; sin embargo, como pasó en el caso de Greg Lake con Asia o el reciente caso de Ray Wilson con Genesis, Horn no habia sido la mejor elección para cantar los temas de Anderson, muchas veces Squire apoyó en los coros, pero esto no ayudó a que Trevor pudiera salir bien del asunto. Las giras en América y Canadá resultaron, pero fue en Inglaterra donde las audiencias reaccionaron muchas veces con violencia, insultando y tirando botellas a la agrupación. En Febrero de 1981 finalizado el “Drama Tour”, Squire pone fin a Yes, dejando a Horn libre pero con los crespos hechos (Trevor prefiere hablar poco o nada de esa etapa), así que tanto él como Downes reforman Buggles y preparan nuevo material sin embargo Island no les renueva contrato, y terminan en el sello francés Carrere, componiendo lo que sería el segundo LP de The Buggles. Al final, Downes decide irse también dejando a Horn sólo y con apoyo de Simon Darlow y colaboraciones de Chris Squire, Gary Langan y Anne Dudley completa el álbum; “Adventures in Modern Recording” no entra en los charts al igual que los singles “I am a Camera” (que es una regrabación del tema “Into the Lens” del “Drama”), “On TV”, “Lenny”y “Beatnik”. La historia de Buggles llegó hasta aquí.

Downes forma el supergrupo Asia con Steve Howe en guitarras, Carl Palmer (E,L&P) en batería y John Wetton (ex-Family, Ex-King Crimson, Ex-UK y Ex-Roxy Music) en bajo y voz; editando su primer álbum en 1982. Downes colaboraría con Wetton constantemente y produciría a la banda GTR (otro supergrupo como Asia formado por Howe y Steve Hackett de Genesis).

Horn se dedicaría a la producción de artistas como ABC, Dollar, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Spandau Ballet, los mismos Yes reformados en 1983 con Jon Anderson y Tony Kaye, Art of Noise, Seal, Lisa Stansfield, Tina Turner, Propaganda, Pet Shop Boys, T.a.T.u. entre otros y convirtiendo su sello Perfect Songs posteriormente en el sello ZTT.

- Trevor Horn explicó que se editaría este álbum a nivel europeo en algún momento; sin embargo aún no sea dado este hecho.

RARE 80′s (1) PERSON TO PERSON

Este es el primer post de grupos realmente oscuros dentro de la escena wave ochentera. Person to Person es una banda formada en Sheffield, con un estilo bastante similar a Endgames (al menos en algunos temas) e integrada por David Palmer (ex-bateria de ABC) y que contaba con Pete Easton (vocalista), Lloyd Richards (guitarras), Jeremy Meek (bajo) y Dave Clayton (teclados y futuro colaborador de ABC y Simply Red entre otros). La discografia no es muy extensa, de hecho sólo se limita a un LP y tres sencillos extraidos del mismo.
Agradecería si tuvieran más información sobre esta banda, realmente vale la pena escucharla.
